This custom bathroom brought a unique set of circumstances with it. It was in a well built home from all appearances on the outside but on the inside it was all basic builder grade materials. In truth, it also lacked in functionality as many new homes can.
Items on the homeowners wishlist was a soaker tub, a custom shower, more storage, and more bathroom floor space since the walk in closet was basically a smaller rectangle box inside of the bathroom.
Benhardt Construction angled the walk in closet corner by clipping the corners of the rectangle box and put the new doorway at a 45 degree angle to the rest of the bathroom.
With the shower we were able to bump the shower out to the exterior wall that was previously false framed to hide a single vent stack that was carrying the basement bathroom. Boxing around the vent stack left it fully functional while leaving us plenty of room to place a granite covered bench nook! This allowed the homeowner to be able to sit for the first time while showering while keeping the floor space that they were accustomed to.
Before there was his and her’s sinks. One of them was removed and capped off to make way for the much larger soaker tub. In the remaining space we installed a pantry cabinet for towels and other bathroom storage.
The soaker tub was placed in custom built deck and we mixed several bags of thinset that we placed under the tub when it was set. The first reason was to keep the tub from having those annoying little squeaks. The second reason, a nice bonus if I may say, is that the thinset really helps the tub hold the temperature of the water. Just like the old school cast iron tubs did! And yes, lastly, we insulated the sides of the soaker with insulation batts to further keep the homeowner all warm and toasty for hours. Yes, hours!
With all the things I mentioned already, we ended up with far more floor space in the master bathroom. Allowing easy walking instead of the robotic sharp left and right turns they had to make before in order to maneuver through the bathroom.
At the end of the project the homeowners got everything they were hoping for with their custom master bathroom remodel.
