With winter nearly upon us most of the leaves have fallen from the trees. (There are still a few stubborn leaves left)
It is very important that you or someone you hire check your gutters and downspouts and make sure they are clean and in proper working order.
Gutters were not designed or installed on your home to hold leaves all winter.
Gutters and downspouts are meant to guide water safely and efficiently away from your home.
Water can be a damaging thing.
If your gutters are full of leaves and debris water can NOT flow. If water can not flow and it is cold enough it can freeze. When water freezes it can actually travel underneath your shingles and underneath your roof sheathing.
This is called an Ice Dam
Guess what happens when it an ice dam thaws out inside your home?? Yep you guessed it!
If your downspouts do not have at minimum – elbows with a splash block – you are setting yourself up for trouble as well.
If we do have a significant amount of rainfall or a heavy snow thaw – the ground is saturated to begin with. If there is no diversion of water away from your home the water has nowhere to go.
When water has nowhere to go it builds up pressure which can cause damage to your concrete and or flooding.
Take a few minutes now. Spend a few dollars NOW.
By the time you deal with the damage cleanup, the insurance, the reconstruction, time eating out (if the area affected is a kitchen like the above pictures) or worse the time you may have had to spend in a hotel because the damage was so significant – you are far, far ahead to double check these items I mentioned and make sure they are in working order.
